In a clear signal of investor confidence in Spain’s growing biotech landscape, Italian private equity firm Ambienta SGR has acquired Agronova Biotech, a Spain-based leader in agricultural biotechnology. The deal represents Ambienta’s first major investment in the Spanish biotech sector, positioning the firm at the forefront of sustainable agri-innovation in southern Europe.
Based in Andalusia, Agronova Biotech specializes in natural biostimulants and microbiological crop solutions, focusing on improving soil health, nutrient efficiency, and crop yields through eco-friendly practices. The company’s portfolio aligns closely with the European Green Deal, aiming to reduce chemical inputs in farming.
Its innovations have attracted attention beyond Iberia, exporting to more than 20 countries and partnering with leading research institutions. Agronova’s approach fits the broader trend toward biological inputs in global agriculture, a market projected to reach €27 billion by 2030.

Why Did Ambienta Invest?
Ambienta is Europe’s largest sustainability-focused asset manager, with more than €3 billion in assets under management. Their interest in Agronova highlights three key themes:
- Sustainability Leadership: Agronova’s products help reduce reliance on synthetic agrochemicals, making them attractive to investors focused on ESG outcomes.
- Export Potential: Agronova has already developed global reach, and Ambienta can help scale production and distribution even further.
- Biotech-Market Synergy: Ambienta is deepening its footprint in life sciences by backing a company that sits at the intersection of biotech and climate-tech.
This acquisition could be a turning point for Spanish agri-biotech firms, many of which are small and medium-sized enterprises seeking global traction. It reflects a rising interest in Spanish innovation from pan-European capital, particularly funds with thematic strategies around sustainability, food security, and environmental impact.
The deal also supports the Spanish government's efforts to boost biotech visibility at the EU level. Just days before the announcement, Spain’s Industry Minister Jordi Hereu called for greater EU support for biotech SMEs during a competitiveness council in Brussels.
While the financial terms of the Agronova acquisition were not disclosed, industry analysts estimate the deal could be valued between €40 million and €60 million, based on comparable exits in the sector. Ambienta is expected to inject further capital to expand Agronova’s R&D and production capabilities over the next 12 to 24 months.
This deal sets the tone for what could be a busy second half of 2025 in Spanish biotech, particularly in sustainable agriculture, synthetic biology, and microbial innovation.
